Resumo
Este documento examina os papéis da cultura e das virtudes na ética médica. Ele argumenta que o principio, que é a abordagem geral da ética médica nas sociedades ocidentais, não é suficientemente abrangente para compreender plenamente como os dilemas morais médicos são resolvidos nas sociedades ocidentais e não ocidentais. Isto porque o principlismo negligencia a importância da cultura e das virtudes na profissão médica. Para compreender plenamente a natureza da tomada de decisões médico-éticas, precisamos mudar o foco dos princípios para as virtudes da própria profissão médica e as culturas das sociedades nas quais a medicina é praticada. Ilustro estas reivindicações com o exemplo do aborto na ética islâmica.
