Abstract

Among students aged 10 to 12, a decrease in motivation towards traditional physical education is observed. In response, traditional games are presented as a pedagogical tool capable of rekindling intrinsic interest in physical activity. The objective of this research was to determine the influence of traditional games on the motivation and level of physical activity of children at the “Medardo Neira Garzón” Basic Education School. To this end, a methodology based on traditional games was applied, with the purpose of promoting healthy habits and reducing sedentary behavior. A quasi-experimental, longitudinal study with a quantitative approach was designed. The Physical Education Motivation Questionnaire (CMEF-EP) and the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (PAQ-C) were used, administered before and after the intervention. The program consisted of eight weeks of activities with 60-minute sessions, three times a week. The sample included students of both sexes, between 10 and 12 years old. The results showed an increase in genuine motivation and physical activity levels among the participants. In conclusion, incorporating traditional games into physical education classes not only improves physical fitness but also acts as an emotional catalyst. These games proved more effective than conventional classes in promoting adherence to exercise, strengthening active participation, and fostering the development of healthy habits within the school setting.
