Ni una menos, political subject: Journalistic narratives on their tenth anniversary

Abstract

June 3, 2025, marked the 10th anniversary of the first Ni Una Menos march in Argentina. On June 3, 2025, feminist activism and journalism revisited the slogans that gave rise to the movement. The article is part of a larger research project called Experiential Narratives: Stories, Discourses and Representations, funded by the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) of Argentina. Within this framework, interest in media narratives and the articulation between academia and activism has been present for more than a decade. In relation to the media, it has been possible to understand the impact of feminist journalism throughout the years 2010-2020, the synergistic alliance between journalism and activism, and the role of the media in building citizenship. With regard to the articulation of academia and activism, attention has been paid to the evolution of the conversation, especially throughout 2018 during the discussion on the legalization of abortion in Argentina and a little later, to the transformations that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding the modulations of journalistic narratives that were central to the conversation around June 3, 2025, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Ni Una Menos, deepens previous inquiries and focuses questions on modifications, shifts, and the emergence of activist narratives. This work specifically analyzes the main topics recovered in historical perspective by journalistic coverage, the predominant core meanings and an assessment of the current situation in a political context of right-wing radicalization. Through a thematic analysis, the narratives appearing in Argentine national media were coded into significant topics. The study shows that the most recurring themes were the emergence of Ni Una Menos, its historical and social context and the reconstruction of their own genealogy. On the other hand, the concern regarding the setback in gender policies and the protection of rights features prominently. Finally, the main topics revolve around political violence, the feminist political agenda, the idea of ??being born feminists and the formation of a political subject.
