Abstract
The safety and health of workers is a fundamental right, applicable not only to formal, but also informal laborers. The aim of this study is to assess caregiver burnout as an occupational hazard among informal caregivers of individuals with disabilities in the city of Cuenca. For this purpose, we conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study that involved 123 caregivers. We administered a structured questionnaire, including the Zarit test to measure caregiver overload. Our findings revealed that the majority of participants (46.4%) were between the ages of 45 and 64, and 82.9% were female. The primary caregiver was the mother or father (46.3%). The major disability was an intellectual disability (46.3%), with 27.6% being moderate and 72.4% being severe. Overload was observed in 52.9% of caregivers, with 29.3% being mild and 23.6% severe. It is concluded that a high prevalence of caregiver overload exists among those providing care for individuals with disabilities in the city of Cuenca. To improve the quality of life of these informal workers, early diagnosis and timely interventions are necessary.
